Recreating this painting will help students develop skills in perspective drawing and rendering light and shadow to create depth. Students will also learn to simplify complex forms into basic shapes and use hatching to create texture.
technical profile
approach — 8 steps
Lightly sketch the basic shapes and perspective lines of the room, including the beams, walls, and objects.
Establish the main light source and map out the areas of light and shadow.
Begin applying a base layer of diluted brown or gray wash to the entire canvas.
Build up darker values in the shadows using hatching and cross-hatching techniques.
Add lighter values to the illuminated areas, leaving some areas of the base wash visible.
Paint the details of the machine and chair, paying attention to their forms and textures.
Refine the highlights and shadows to create a sense of depth and realism.
Add final details and adjust values as needed.
