Recreating this painting will help students practice layering washes and creating subtle color gradients. It also encourages simplification of a landscape into basic shapes and values.
technical profile
approach — 8 steps
Lightly sketch the horizon line and mountain shapes.
Apply a light wash of yellow across the area where the sun reflects on the water.
Mix a pale blue and wash it over the sky area, leaving some areas lighter for clouds.
Create a gradient wash of blues and greens for the water, darkest at the bottom.
Mix a muted purple and paint the distant mountains with soft edges.
Add a thin dark line where the water meets the land.
Allow each layer to dry before applying the next to prevent muddiness.
Add final details and adjust values as needed.
color palette
primary · cerulean blue · yellow ochre · ultramarine blue
