approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Lightly sketch the main shapes: Colosseum, Arch, and the foreground hill.

  2. step 02

Add the basic outline of the tree and other landscape elements.

  3. step 03

Apply a light wash of diluted brown and grey to the sky area.

  4. step 04

Paint the Colosseum with a very light wash of yellow ochre and grey, defining the arches with slightly darker tones.

  5. step 05

Use a similar wash for the Arch, adding more detail to suggest its structure.

  6. step 06

Layer washes of brown, ochre, and a touch of red to the foreground hill, creating depth with darker values in the shadows.

  7. step 07

Add the tree branches with a fine brush and dark brown paint.

  8. step 08

Refine details and add final touches, such as subtle highlights and shadows.
