approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Sketch the basic shapes and composition lightly on the canvas, paying attention to proportions and placement.

  2. step 02

Block in the background with broad strokes of dark red and brown, creating a textured base.

  3. step 03

Establish the main color masses for each object (apples, jar, books, pipe) using simplified color mixtures.

  4. step 04

Begin layering colors to define the forms and create highlights and shadows on the apples and jar.

  5. step 05

Add details to the books, including the edges and the suggestion of text on the covers.

  6. step 06

Refine the tablecloth, adding folds and variations in color to create a sense of depth.

  7. step 07

Add final highlights and details to bring the painting to life, paying attention to the direction of light.

  8. step 08

Check the overall balance and make any necessary adjustments to color and value.
