study guide

est. 12 hrs

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Lightly sketch the basic shapes of the architecture, mountains, and foreground elements.

  2. step 02

Establish the horizon line and the overall composition.

  3. step 03

Apply a thin wash of diluted yellow ochre or raw sienna across the entire surface to create a warm undertone.

  4. step 04

Begin layering in darker values to define the shadows and forms of the architecture and mountains.

  5. step 05

Use a dry brush technique to add texture to the rocks and sand.

  6. step 06

Paint the figures and camels in the foreground, paying attention to their relative scale.

  7. step 07

Add final details and highlights to enhance the sense of depth and realism.

  8. step 08

Glaze with thin washes to unify the colors and create atmospheric perspective.

color palette

primary · yellow ochre · raw sienna · burnt umber

secondary · ivory black · titanium white · cadmium yellow

Mix yellow ochre and burnt umber for the base tones of the rocks and sand. Use white to lighten these colors for highlights. Add small amounts of black to darken shadows.
