study guide

est. 6 hrs

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Lightly sketch the main shapes: buildings, boats, and horizon line.

  2. step 02

Apply a light wash of diluted raw sienna or similar color across the entire paper for the sky and water.

  3. step 03

While the first wash is still damp, add slightly darker washes to indicate the clouds and reflections in the water.

  4. step 04

Begin building up the darker values of the buildings and boats using a slightly more concentrated mix of raw sienna and burnt umber.

  5. step 05

Use dry brush strokes to suggest texture on the buildings and boats.

  6. step 06

Add details like masts and windows with a fine brush and a darker mix of paint.

  7. step 07

Lift color with a clean, damp brush or paper towel to create highlights and soften edges.

  8. step 08

Add final dark accents to define shapes and create contrast.

color palette

primary · raw sienna · burnt umber · payne's gray

secondary · ultramarine blue · yellow ochre

Achieve the various shades of brown and gray by mixing raw sienna and burnt umber in different proportions. Add a touch of ultramarine blue to create cooler grays.

techniques

  • ·wet-on-wet blending
  • ·dry brush
  • ·lifting color
  • ·atmospheric perspective
  • ·value layering

common pitfalls

  • →Overworking the painting and losing the loose, spontaneous feel.
  • →Making the values too uniform and lacking contrast.
  • →Adding too much detail too early.
  • →Not allowing washes to dry properly before adding subsequent layers.
