some experience helpful

This painting is a good exercise in capturing a scene with loose watercolor washes and suggesting details rather than rendering them precisely. Students will practice layering washes and creating depth through color and value.

study guide

est. 6 hrs

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Lightly sketch the main shapes: the buildings, figures, tree, and horizon line.

  2. step 02

Apply a light wash of diluted yellow ochre to the foreground and parts of the background.

  3. step 03

Add a light blue wash to the sky, blending it with the yellow ochre near the horizon.

  4. step 04

Paint the tree with a mix of green and brown washes, allowing the colors to blend on the paper.

  5. step 05

Add darker washes of brown and purple to define the buildings and figures, focusing on shadows.

  6. step 06

Use a fine brush to add details like the lines of the market stalls and the outlines of figures.

  7. step 07

Strengthen the shadows under the stalls and around the figures to create depth.

  8. step 08

Add final highlights with a slightly lighter wash or by lifting color with a clean brush.

color palette

primary · yellow ochre · burnt umber · cerulean blue

secondary · purple · sap green · raw sienna

Mix yellow ochre and burnt umber for earth tones. Create greens by mixing blue and yellow. Use purple to create shadows.

techniques

  • ·wet-on-wet blending
  • ·layering washes
  • ·dry brush (for tree texture)
  • ·lifting color

common pitfalls

  • →Overworking the washes and losing the transparency of the watercolor.
  • →Making the colors too saturated.
  • →Defining the figures too precisely.
  • →Not allowing washes to dry completely before layering.
