study guide

est. 6 hrs

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Lightly sketch the horizon line, the figure, and the basic shapes of the hills.

  2. step 02

Apply a light wash of diluted blue for the sky, leaving some areas white for clouds.

  3. step 03

Mix a light yellow-brown for the distant hills and apply a thin wash.

  4. step 04

Create a darker, warmer brown for the foreground hills and apply a wash, leaving some areas lighter.

  5. step 05

While the foreground wash is still damp, drop in darker brown and green pigments to create texture and shadows.

  6. step 06

Use a dry brush technique with darker browns and greens to add details to the vegetation and rocks.

  7. step 07

Paint the figure with a dark blue-black, paying attention to the simple shapes and shadows.

  8. step 08

Add final details and highlights to the vegetation and figure.

color palette

primary · ultramarine blue · yellow ochre · burnt umber

secondary · sap green · cadmium yellow

Mix yellow ochre and burnt umber in varying proportions to achieve the different shades of brown for the hills. Add a touch of blue to darken the browns. Use a lot of water to keep the washes light and transparent.

techniques

  • ·watercolor washes
  • ·wet-on-wet blending
  • ·dry brush texture

common pitfalls

  • →Overworking the washes and losing the transparency of the watercolor.
  • →Making the colors too saturated and losing the subtle tones.
  • →Not allowing the washes to dry completely before adding details.
  • →Making the figure too detailed and distracting from the landscape.
