study guide

est. 12 hrs

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Lightly sketch the basic shapes of the buildings and the pier structures, paying attention to perspective.

  2. step 02

Establish the horizon line and the waterline.

  3. step 03

Begin with a light wash of diluted yellow ochre or raw sienna for the sunlit areas of the buildings and reflections.

  4. step 04

Add darker washes of burnt umber and gray to the shadows and the pier structures, building up the values gradually.

  5. step 05

Paint the reflections in the water, using vertical strokes and varying the colors and values to create a sense of movement.

  6. step 06

Add details to the buildings, such as windows and doors, using a fine brush.

  7. step 07

Create the water ripples with horizontal strokes of blues and grays.

  8. step 08

Add final touches and highlights to enhance the overall effect.

color palette

primary · yellow ochre · burnt umber · gray · titanium white

secondary · ultramarine blue · raw sienna · payne's gray

Mix different values of gray by combining black and white, and create warmer grays by adding a touch of burnt umber. Achieve the water colors by mixing blues with grays and whites.
