some experience helpful

Recreating this painting will help students practice capturing atmospheric perspective and rendering fur texture with loose brushstrokes. It also offers a good exercise in simplifying complex shapes and creating a sense of depth.

study guide

est. 8 hrs

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Sketch the basic shapes: horizon line, dog, cliff, and bird placement.

  2. step 02

Block in the sky and water with diluted blues and grays, establishing the overall tone.

  3. step 03

Paint the cliff using browns and greens, varying the tones to create form.

  4. step 04

Add the dog, starting with a dark underpainting and building up texture with short, broken strokes.

  5. step 05

Paint the birds with quick, gestural strokes, paying attention to their angles and positions.

  6. step 06

Add details to the grass and foliage on the cliff.

  7. step 07

Refine the reflections in the water, using slightly darker and desaturated versions of the colors above.

  8. step 08

Add final highlights and details to the dog and birds.

color palette

primary · ultramarine blue · burnt umber · titanium white

secondary · yellow ochre · sap green · ivory black

Mix blues and whites for the sky and water, adding small amounts of umber for muted tones. Use umber and ochre for the cliff, and mix black with umber and a touch of blue for the dog.

  • →Overworking the details, especially in the dog's fur.
  • →Making the colors too saturated, losing the atmospheric effect.
  • →Incorrectly placing the birds, disrupting the composition.
  • →Not establishing a strong value structure before adding details.
