study guide

est. 15 hrs

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Prepare the canvas with a neutral gray tone.

  2. step 02

Lightly sketch the main elements: angels, sphinx, pyramids, and moon.

  3. step 03

Establish the darkest values on the sphinx and in the foreground.

  4. step 04

Begin layering lighter values to define the forms of the angels and their wings.

  5. step 05

Use dry brushing to create texture on the sphinx and in the landscape.

  6. step 06

Gradually build up the atmospheric perspective by softening edges and lightening values in the distance.

  7. step 07

Add details to the angels' faces and clothing.

  8. step 08

Refine the highlights and shadows to create depth and dimension.

color palette

primary · ivory black · titanium white

secondary · payne's gray · raw umber

Use varying ratios of black and white to create a full range of grays. Add small amounts of raw umber or payne's gray to warm or cool the grays as needed.
