study guide

est. 6 hrs

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Lightly sketch the main shapes: horizon line, trees, buildings, and figures.

  2. step 02

Apply a light wash of yellow ochre and raw sienna to the field, leaving some areas lighter for highlights.

  3. step 03

Paint the sky with diluted blues and grays, blending the colors softly.

  4. step 04

Add darker washes of burnt umber and indigo to the trees and bushes, creating depth and shadows.

  5. step 05

Use a smaller brush to add details to the buildings, figures, and animals.

  6. step 06

Layer additional washes to build up the values and create a sense of atmosphere.

  7. step 07

Add final touches with dry brush strokes to create texture in the field and trees.

  8. step 08

Evaluate and adjust values and colors as needed.
