study guide

est. 8 hrs

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Lightly sketch the main shapes: the buildings, the road, and the basic tree lines.

  2. step 02

Apply a light wash of diluted yellow ochre and burnt sienna to the buildings and road.

  3. step 03

While the first wash is still damp, add slightly darker tones to suggest shadows and details on the buildings.

  4. step 04

Paint the sky with a diluted blue wash, leaving some areas lighter to suggest clouds.

  5. step 05

Use a mix of greens and browns to paint the trees, varying the values and hues to create depth.

  6. step 06

Add the figures along the road using small, quick brushstrokes and simple shapes.

  7. step 07

Define the edges of the road and buildings with slightly darker washes.

  8. step 08

Add final details, such as the windows and architectural features, using a fine brush.
