approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Lightly sketch the main shapes: mountains, buildings, and the foreground cliff.

  2. step 02

Establish the horizon line and the basic composition.

  3. step 03

Apply a thin wash of diluted yellow ochre and burnt sienna for the sky and distant mountains.

  4. step 04

Layer progressively darker washes of burnt sienna and umber for the closer mountains and foreground.

  5. step 05

Add details to the buildings using a fine brush and a mix of white and ochre.

  6. step 06

Paint the figures in the foreground, paying attention to their relative sizes and positions.

  7. step 07

Use dry brush technique to add texture to the rocks and mountains.

  8. step 08

Add final details and highlights to create depth and definition.
