some experience helpful

This painting is great for practicing tonalism and creating atmosphere with a limited palette. Students will learn to simplify forms and use loose brushstrokes to suggest detail.

study guide

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Lightly sketch the horizon line and the basic shapes of the hills and palm tree.

  2. step 02

Establish the sky color with a thin wash of yellow and ochre, leaving some areas lighter for the sun.

  3. step 03

Block in the distant hills with a darker shade of ochre and brown, blending the edges.

  4. step 04

Paint the foreground vegetation with loose, gestural brushstrokes, varying the tones of brown and ochre.

  5. step 05

Add the palm tree trunk with a thin, vertical line of brown, and suggest the fronds with quick, broken strokes.

  6. step 06

Refine the sky and foreground, adding subtle variations in color and value to create depth.

  7. step 07

Add final details, such as highlights on the vegetation and subtle variations in the sky.

  8. step 08

Let dry and add a thin glaze of burnt umber to unify the painting.

color palette

primary · yellow ochre · raw umber · titanium white

secondary · burnt umber · ivory black

Mix yellow ochre with white for the sky, and add small amounts of raw umber or burnt umber to create darker tones for the hills and vegetation. Use ivory black sparingly to darken shadows.

techniques

  • ·dry brushing
  • ·scumbling
  • ·tonal painting
  • ·glazing
  • ·limited palette

common pitfalls

  • →Overworking the details and losing the loose, impressionistic feel.
  • →Using too much black and making the painting look muddy.
  • →Failing to create enough contrast between the sky and the foreground.
  • →Making the palm tree too symmetrical and stiff.
