study guide

est. 8 hrs

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Lightly sketch the main compositional elements: the tower, the walls on either side of the path, and the overhead branches.

  2. step 02

Establish the sky with a wash of diluted blue, leaving some areas lighter to suggest clouds.

  3. step 03

Apply a base layer of color to the tower and walls, using light washes of ochre and umber.

  4. step 04

Begin layering darker values to define the forms and create shadows on the walls and tower.

  5. step 05

Add details to the tower, such as the window and individual stones, using a fine brush.

  6. step 06

Paint the foliage with varying shades of green and brown, using short, broken brushstrokes to create texture.

  7. step 07

Define the path with washes of brown and gray, suggesting the texture of the ground.

  8. step 08

Add final details and highlights to enhance the sense of depth and realism.

color palette

primary · ultramarine blue · yellow ochre · burnt umber

secondary · sap green · raw sienna · payne's gray

Mix various shades of brown and gray by combining burnt umber, yellow ochre, and ultramarine blue. Use diluted washes for the sky and initial layers, and build up darker values with thicker paint.
