Osman Hamdi Bey was a prominent Ottoman intellectual, art historian, archaeologist, and painter. He is best known for his Orientalist paintings, which blend European academic techniques with Ottoman and Middle Eastern subject matter, and for founding the Istanbul Archaeology Museums and the Academy of Fine Arts.
